Let’s continue journalling the making of this Death Proof poster! In my last post I left everyone with the very quick sketch (I deleted the post because the images went missing:() that was very hard for me to leave at that but I tried really hard to let it go because I need an actual process to make these types of pieces. Phew! That was an absolutely necessary run on sentence.

When I came back to it the next day I continued to move forward with the plan. I did notice that I was not really into the reference that I found for Rose McGowan’s character so I set out to find a better one. At this point, from a narrative standpoint, I figured I would stay focused on the first part of the movie. If you are familiar with it, we are introduced to the female protagonists in classic Tarantino fashion. Lots of talking, lots of cool music, more talking, an intro to the antagonist, Stuntman Mike. This is a fantastic setup and is of course the foundation of the movie so it feels like a good place to start as far as the poster is concerned.

So this is pretty straightforward. I get into each character, one day at a time. I did do a little test on Stuntman Mike though. I as you should be able to see, I added a little bit of grayscale to the back of him to see if the technical approach was going to work. This is what makes him a little “complete” when compared to the rest of the people. You will also the new version of Rose’s character and, most importantly, the addition of Jungle Julia, played by Sydney Tamiia Poitier. I added her for two reasons, first, the composition felt like it needed it from a visual standpoint, but I also thought she was an important character in the first half of the movie.

Technical considerations for digital artists out there are nothing special. I use Kyle’s ultimate pencil and that’s about it. I have this weird pseudo hatching thing I do. It’s not a brush or anything. The little tick markets are how I draw now and have become a part of my style, which I care very little about. We can talk more about that later….
